Norwegian

The Norwegian language is a Germanic language spoken in Norway.

Norwegian is closely related to and generally mutually intelligible with Swedish and Danish.

Together with these two languages as well as Faroese and Icelandic, Norwegian belongs to the North Germanic languages, also referred to as the Scandinavian languages.

In total there are approximately 5 million speakers of Norwegian worldwide.

There are in fact two official forms of the written Norwegian language being the 'book language' and 'New Norwegian'.

There is however no official spoken standard of Norwegian, but there is a de facto spoken standard being 'Standard East Norwegian' which is spoken mainly by the urban upper and middle class in East Norway. 'Standard East Norwegian' is the form generally taught to foreign students.
