My name is Stephen Johnson and I am from the USA. I specialize in teaching students who have studied English to the intermediate level and want to improve their ability to speak and write in English.
I currently live in India, where I write, study philosophy and teach English. Before this I was a certified project manager in New York City where I managed Internet and ESL software projects. Some of the companies I have worked for are Longman ESL, Cambridge University Press ELT, The Associated Press and Yahoo!. Many of the projects I managed involved some aspect of teaching English.
I am easy going and get along with all types of people. I have many interests and abilities. For example, I've studied biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, genetics and environmental science. Other subjects I have studied include art and design, music, audio production, computer science, world cultures and religions.
I am a guitarist and have composed and performed my songs for many years. I was a carpenter and worked in construction management in New York City. Traveling is also something I enjoy and I've been all over North America and to various places in South America and Asia. I am also a certified SCUBA diver. I read a lot and in addition to literature and non-fiction I like to keep up with world events, politics and current affairs.
I enjoy the English language and teaching very much and I'm very glad to say that my students have given me high marks and a warm reception. I'm very excited about teaching online and have lots of ideas and plans to help you improve your English.
I have been teaching English for four years at various organizations in India.
In 2011 I received a TESOL certificate after completing a 120 hour course. I have been working 10-20 hours per week as a volunteer teacher at Tibet Charity, a school in Dharamshala, India since March, 2012. I have taught classes at the elementary level, and pre-intermediate through advanced intermediate levels.
I have a bachelor of arts degree from SUNY Purchase College with interdisciplinary concentrations in Internet technologies, graphic design, project management, and environmental science. I also have many certificates in different subjects including environmental management, Internet programming, and English as a second language.
I continue to study the English language and take great interest in different teaching methodologies and their application to the needs of different types of students.
My approach is communicative. One very important key to success with English is regular practice speaking English with a native speaker. This is why having an online tutor is so helpful. We can just have conversations about anything or if you are in a course or studying on your own I can help you by reviewing topics you are working on and just talking about the English language and how it is used.
I also have a method I have developed to help students use English more naturally, so you can speak English without having to think about it so much. I will explain this in the free trial lesson if you're interested.
My basic philosophy is that anyone can learn to speak English naturally and easily without needing to struggle with grammar and vocabulary. Learning English can and should be fun. I focus on what you know and understand and build from there using many different types of learning materials and activities.
Grammar is important but using English well and easily comes from developing a natural feeling for what is correct, not by memorizing rules and vocabulary. I encourage my students to read, listen, write and speak as much as possible.
I focus on what my students need and let that guide how I teach. So if you want to improve your conversation skills or work on business writing and communication or if you need grammar to pass a test or want to prepare for job interviews, I can help you. I have lots of methods and resources to help you learn. I use online materials so we can look at these together during our session.
My style is supportive, encouraging and positive. While learning English requires a lot of effort, I do my best to make it fun, interesting and rewarding.
Very interesting and helpful first lesson! Stephen gave me good tips and advice to improve my spoken English fluency.
Stephen is a very good teacher, the lesson was relaxed and I got useful tips for further study.
