About me - English
I am a native Brit from London, England and a qualified, practised and experienced Teacher of Modern Languages and English as a Foreign Language. I have spent the past 15 years teaching languages in London, England, Edinburgh, Scotland and Innsbruck, Austria as well as online.
I am a keen traveller having spent time living and working in Europe and North America. I have travelled to Africa, South America and have visited many European and North American cities. I am currently living in Vancouver, Canada with my small family.
I enjoy the outdoor lifestyle - skiing and hiking - and living in Canada provides me with opportunities to enjoy my favourite hobbies. I also love to read and spend some of my time working with native and non-native English speakers teaching and proofreading their work both academically and for business.
Qualifications & Experience
I started learning languages from school age and continued to study German at Royal Holloway, University of London, graduating with a 2:1 in 2002. I am a qualified Teacher of Modern Languages having studied at St Mary's College in London for a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (graduating in 2004), and since then, I have worked in several schools teaching German, Spanish and English as a Foreign Language as well as working online teaching languages.
Whilst living and teaching in Scotland, I decided to improve my knowledge of Spanish at the University of Dundee, graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Spanish in 2010. I also completed a TEFL qualification so that I can teach my native language and was awarded this in 2006 as well as TESL certification in 2021 from the University of British Columbia, Canada. I am also qualified to teach IELTS.
I have vast experience working with students all over the world, children, teenagers and adults. I have also completed numerous English recordings for Austrian school examinations and for in-house school examinations in Scotland as well as several translations, some for large corporations such as Renault and the German Bundesliga.
Teaching Approach
My teaching style and approach is aimed at the individual’s learning preferences and needs. I am an advocate of covering the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as other aspects of language acquisition to help students become all-round confident communicators of the language they are learning.
Lessons are tailored to the student’s needs and their final target, this may include the following:
- improving grades in exams (including IELTS, CELPIP and TOEFL),
- conversation sessions to improve student's confidence, vocabulary and grammar as well as develop uses of everyday and common English expressions and sayings,
- improving pronunciation and phonetics of pre-learned and newly learned language,
- enhancing customer and business experience,
- learning holiday / transactional language to enrich a trip, or
- simply getting the flavour of something new.
Pupils will set the pace of their learning and their requirements will be addressed in the initial discounted lesson and revisited in later lessons. After every session, written feedback will be sent to the student as well as spoken feedback during classes.
