About me - English
I am a native speaker of American English who lives in the United States.
I am married and have a grown daughter who is attending law school.
I love languages and enjoy helping others reach their language goals. My hobbies include reading, Pilates and classical music.
Qualifications & Experience
I hold an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as well as an additional MA in Russian/Slavic Linguistics from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
I spent over a year abroad in Russia and am a fluent speaker of that language as well as a native speaker of English.
ESL teaching experience includes the Lafayette (Indiana) Adult Resource Academy, Ivy Tech State College (Lafayette, Indiana) and most recently at the Kent State University English Language Institute in Kent, Ohio and the English Language Institute at the University of Akron.
I have taught the target skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. My students' countries of origin include Saudi Arabia, Oman, Jordan, China, Japan, Guatemala and Mexico.
Teaching Approach
My teaching approach is tailored to each student. In the free introductory lesson I listen to the student's goals and hopes for future language use.
The materials chosen (text, videos, audio files) are dependent on the student's level and focus (basic communication, grammar, etc).
I try to make lessons both challenging and fun, and particularly enjoy seeing my students progress over time.
