I was raised in New York, but am currently living in Colombia (South America). My family is originally from Medellin, Colombia.
I started teaching around 13 years ago, simply because I knew the language, without knowing that it would become my passion. I love teaching and even though I am currently an Academic Manager in a language center here in Medellín, I want to be able to continue teaching and offering online classes can help me do so.
Qualifications & Experience
I hold a TESOL certification and a CTBE (Certificate in Teaching Business English), which I obtained on my quest to become a better teacher.
I started working at language centers in 2001 and during this time mainly taught children, teens and some adults. In 2005 I worked at a school (Colegio Jesus Maria), here in Medellin, teaching 9th, 10th and 11th graders English as a Foreign Language. The following year I taught at a different school (Marymount School) 6th and 7th graders, Math and English. These two years were a great experience, because they allowed me to get a sense of formal education and get additional training at both schools.
After this I was offered a Coordinating position at a language center, where I was in charge of hiring and training teachers, along with student contact and personalized tracking. Since then I've been growing within the company and today I am the Academic and Language Solutions Manager, and am directly in charge of 6 academic coordinators, and indirectly of over 50 teachers nationwide, 20 translators and other outsourced language providers, such as tour guides or voiceover experts.
Teaching Approach
I specialize in preparing students for international English Exams like: IELTS, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, TOEFL, TEOIC, etc.
I have always believed that adding fun into the class will allow students to really learn a language. I try to include personalized topics and lesson plans to each session, allowing the student to truly engage in their learning process. I basically love to have fun and let my students do the same.
The first thing that I do is identify my student's learning style, which will help me to prepare my class optimizing his learning strengths. Through a discovery approach I allow the students to get engaged without knowing that they are learning, which makes it that much more effective.
I sometimes use other strategies in class such as a natural and communicative approach to compliment my students learning process.
