Hello, my name is Suzan Gwarges and I'm 28 years old and currently living in United States. I am a native Arabic speaker and teach Arabic, Assyrian. I have taught online with Verbalplanet.com since October 2014. I can speak the following languages fluently: Arabic, Assyrian, English. I am currently offering a free initial trial lesson for new students.

Detailed Profile in English

About me

Hello everyone,

I am originally from the Assyrian community of northern Iraq. I have been living in the U.S. for 6 years.

I enjoy inter cultural exchange, experiencing a diversity of people and foods. My passions are art, dancing, languages, and nature.

I speak Assyrian, also known as Aramaic, as my first language.

I am fluent in Arabic, Aramaic (Assyrian), and English.

Qualifications & Experience

I have an Associate's Degree in Art from a North Carolina college.

I have been tutoring adults in Arabic for 5 years. I have experience teaching one-to-one and in small groups.

I have mostly taught adults, but could teach children as well. I volunteer in a daycare and am very good with children.

Since Assyrian is not a major language, there are few opportunities to teach it officially in a class, however I have been giving unofficial lessons to friends for many years. For me, it is a joy to share the Assyrian language and culture because it is my first language of which I am very proud.

I have worked as an English-Arabic translator.

Teaching Approach

My approach is to meet the goals of the students.

I am able to help with writing, speaking, reading, and listening.

I can teach standard Arabic. I also know other Arab dialects, such as Iraqi, Egyptian, and Levantine Arabic (the region near Palestine, Jordan, and Syria)

Assyrian Only:

I must let you know that the focus of the lessons will be on speaking and conversation. Assyrian has a written language; however, I do not know it well. I was brought up speaking Assyrian as a first language. We speak it in my household and we spoke it in my village in Iraq. My mother knows how to write it, but I did not learn it. In the schools in Iraq, we learned to read and write Arabic only. Therefore, Assyrian is only a spoken language for me.

In our trial lesson, we can discuss your goals and needs. Students all have different goals. Some are beginners who have not yet started learning the alphabet, while others are fluent and just want to practice conversation. Some want to prepare for a vacation to the Middle East, while others are learning for business purposes.

I will cater my lessons to suit your needs.
