Hello, my name is Amy. I am an American from a small town in Minnesota. For the past 4 years I have been teaching English in Spain, mainly in the Malaga area, near the Mediterranean. I am an out-going person who loves adventures!
My hobbies include running (I am currently training for a half marathon), cooking (I enjoying eating the food more than cooking it), and traveling (hence why I'm in Spain!). I also love hanging out with friends, and good food is ALWAYS included! During my time in Spain I have also been learning Spanish, so I understand the needs and difficulties of students.
TEFL certification- Hamline University, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Social Studies teaching, emphasis in World History and Geography-Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota, USA
I currently working as a private English teacher for all ages. I work with a wide range of levels, including exam preparation (Cambridge, Trinity, and TOEFL, etc), conversational English, and English for those who want to work abroad (Interview preparation, CV writing, cover letter writing, etc). In the past I have worked as a freelanced English teacher in many academies in the Malaga area. For three years I was working as a Language and Cultural Assistant in public schools around Malaga. During those years I assisted and led classes in English. I taught many subjects: English, Science, History, Physical Education, and Art.
Since I learned the majority of my Spanish through conversations and private classes in only Spanish, I have taken that approach to my own classes. I strive to have my classes 100% in English (you aren't paying me to speak your native language!). I try to balance grammar learning with as much conversation using the grammar points, as well as including and slang or colloquial sayings. While learning a new language I work to on building my students confidence with English, so that they can successfully converse outside of class.
With my TEFL certification I have learned important methods to teaching a language; such as creating lessons where grammar, listening, writing, and speaking are included. My time in the Spanish public schools have helped me to critique my own teaching to create lessons that are beneficial inside and outside the classroom. My goal is for my students to develop a confident level of English they can use in their study, work, or travel.
