I was born underwater with 3 dollars and 6 dimes. In other words my momma made me whole to swap pieces with the world around me. If you ask me, I have millions of friends, most of which I’ve met through a good book, a beautiful poem, or a documentary that changed my life. We all have stories, and when we hide them from the world, we lose out on the chance to connect with someone else. We miss out on being an influence to others, and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable enough to be positively influenced. I work with youth because growing up all I wanted was someone to tell me I had a voice, and then show me how to use it.

I am a recent graduate of Florida State University where I got my Bachelor of Art degree in English-Creative Writing, and minors in Communications and Global Pathways.

I have served as a volunteer to youth since 2006, working with a kindergarten teacher throughout my middle and high school years. I've served as a mentor and coach in organizations such as PeaceJam, The Palmer-Munroe Teen Center, Capital City Youth Services, and through my own creative writing program. In the summer of 2014, I spent two months in Ghana, Africa as a teacher's aid, and an after school creative writing instructor with a non-profit school in the Kissemah community, Mawuvio Outreach Programme.

In the summer of 2016, I got my first in depth classroom experience as an eighth grade social studies teaching fellow with Breakthrough Miami. Now, I am a toddler teacher with Kindercare Learning Center.

I want to employ my wealth of teaching experience and develop my own capacities as a leader and educator. In my personal life, I used writing as a tool to gain a stronger sense of placement, identity, and control. From pen to paper, I had authority to explore, dictate, and alter the course of my own reality. These are opportunities not readily accessible to students, especially those of a non-native English speaking communities. Shifting from mother tongue to a learned tongue takes time and practice, and my time will be used to facilitate practice of the English language through creative writing and expression.

I contextualize teaching as an exchange rather than a unilateral presentation of material. By engaging with my students, and becoming an active giver of the English language, and receiver of their culture, I hope to promote the exchange of language and culture that builds a bridge between communities.
