Hi. My name is Tindara and I live in Palermo, Sicily.

Palermo is a very old and yet modern town, a melting pot of languages and culture... or - I may say - cultures! Many people coming from foreign countries live here. Many languages spoken, many cultures showing up in the streets of this multicultural and ancient town, rich in art and history. That's maybe the reason why I chose this job many many years ago.

I have taught Italian as a foreign and second language since I was 23 years-old. Teaching Italian as a foreign language was my first job (in France and few years later, in USA, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York). Since then I never stopped teaching my language and showing my students Italian culture and cultures.

I love travelling and knowing new people from all over the world. Even if I do not manage travelling a lot, I do not need to move: the entire world comes to Palermo and it's easy to get to know it here!

Ciao. Il mio nome è Tindara. Sono siciliana, di Palermo. Abito nel centro storico di questa antica e allo stesso tempo moderna città del sud Italia, ricca di storia e di cultura. Anzi, sarebbe meglio di dire: di culture. Perché Palermo è veramente come la si dipinge: un melting pot di lingue e di culture. Forse è anche per questo che ho scelto di fare il lavoro che faccio tuttora con passione: insegnare la mia lingua materna e la cultura in cui sono nata e vissuta a chi desidera conoscerle e approfondirle.

Insegno Italiano agli stranieri da molto tempo. E' stato il mio primo lavoro e ho continuato a farlo per tutta la vita. Perché mi piace e ci metto passione e impegno. Insegnare la mia lingua è un po' come mostrare la mia casa ad un ospite che viene a trovarmi. Lo faccio accomodare dentro casa e faccio in modo di farlo sentire a suo agio. L'ospite è sacro, come si dice da noi. Gli mostro quello che c'è in casa, ma senza essere invadente. L'ospite ha le proprie esigenze e anche le proprie abitudini. Quindi cerco di introdurre il nuovo con gradualità e andando incontro ai bisogni dei miei ospiti. Il rispetto è essenziale.

Ogni studente ha il proprio stile di apprendimento e i propri bisogni specifici, oltre che le proprie motivazioni. C'è chi vuole imparare l'italiano per studio o per lavoro. C'è chi desidera impararlo soltanto per curiosità o per amore nei confronti della lingua di Dante e della cultura del Bel Paese.

Andare incontro ai bisogni dei miei studenti però non significa dare loro soltanto quello si aspettano. A volte, al contrario, ciò che si aspettano non corrisponde a ciò che è nella realtà di questa lingua e di questo Paese. Per questo mi piace "affondare" la lingua e la cultura nella storia e nell'attualità, rivelando anche ciò che vi si nasconde e che non si legge nei manuali che circolano nel modo dell'editoria di settore.

Il metodo che utilizzo è quindi molto "calato" nella realtà e nella cultura di ogni giorno. Non ci sono limiti. E per far questo uso materiali "vivi" e autentici, attuali, non trascurando la tradizione e la storia.

Credo anche nell'efficacia di un approccio multisensoriale e per questo utilizzo molti materiali audio-visivi.

Mi servo di materiali autentici, come dicevo. Li intercetto tra i tanti che circolano in rete e li adatto affinché possano veicolare la lingua e la cultura. Lo faccio anche per lavoro. Insegno infatti anche "Analisi e progettazione di materiali didattici" all'interno di un Master universitario di II livello all'Università di Palermo.

Per quanto riguarda la mia esperienza professionale, insegno - come scrivevo qualche riga fa - da molto tempo, da più di 20 anni. Per questo conosco a fondo metodi, tecniche e materiali di qualsiasi tipo e per ogni bisogno comunicativo, dallo studio universitario al turismo al linguaggio degli affari, alla musica e alla letteratura.

Vi aspetto, quindi, per condurvi per mano - e con la testa - nel vasto e colorato mondo della lingua e della cultura del Bel Paese!
