Hello, my name is Elizabeth Hood and I'm an experienced native English language tutor currently living in the United Kingdom. I have been teaching English online since 2017. I am currently offering a free initial trial lesson for new students.
About me - English

Hello! My name is Lizzy and I have been a teacher for three years. I have a PGCE in Secondary Teaching (ages 11-18), which I gained in 2013. Since then, I have been teaching Music and English in Wales, United Kingdom.

Both Music and English are my passions in life. I love communicating and engaging with people, and both allow me to do that. When you learn another language, you unlock a whole new culture and way of life and suddenly everything in your day-to-day life has two names! I've recently been travelling around the world, and I loved having to learn Spanish during my time in South America. It really helped me to understand what it is like to be in your shoes, where conversation and expressing yourself becomes difficult. I realised that there are many ways to communicate, and speaking is just one of them.

I am excited to begin teaching online as it would be amazing to teach and talk to someone from another country. When I am not teaching, I am interested in music, walking, animals, cooking and watching TV.

Qualifications & Experience

2017

I am currently working at ABC360, teaching English online to pupils in China aged 5-18.

2015-2016

I taught in Oakdale Comprehensive School as the sole Music Teacher, teaching ages 11-16. My responsibilities included taking students through their GCSE's including a written essay. Although the subject was Music, I always had to include literacy in my lessons to ensure that all of my students progressed in their English skills as well as my chosen subject.

2013-2014

I taught at Fitzalan High School. Here, I taught both music and English. My English teaching experience ranged from ages 11-16 and from Basic ESL to mainstream English. My pupils had varied ability, as my classes included pupils who had to learn to read and write for the first time alongside pupils who were ready to enter mainstream English lessons. I had to ensure that all pupils made progress in this environment.

2012 - 2013

PGCE Secondary Education - Passed. My course consisted of two masters level assignments based on classroom research and two contrasting placements in Secondary schools.

2011-2012

Masters in Musicology. My course consisted of four areas of study, including Music in AV Media and Music and Anthropology. My dissertation was on Music in the Welsh Mining Communities.

2008 - 2011

Bachelor of Arts in Music/Popular Music. My course consisted of eight areas of study, including a module on preparing and delivering lessons to primary aged children. My dissertation was on the effect of ADHD in the classroom.

Teaching Approach

Learning English does not have to be hard - all it takes is practice and patience. You will get there before you know it! I recommend writing/speaking/listening to a little English every day instead of practicing a lot once a week - it will be much easier for you to learn and you will remember more.

How I teach you will greatly depend on how you learn. If you need to visually see something, then I will happily Google examples to show you as we go along. If you need to learn at a slower pace, then I will be patient and happily repeat any part of the lesson until we are both happy to continue. Each lesson will continue from where we left things in the lesson before to make sure there are no gaps in your knowledge and I will always test you on previous words and phrases to keep them fresh in your memory.

The most important part of learning a language is that you learn about what interests you, so I will always do my best to tailor the lessons to what you're interested in.

I prefer to include some free-style conversations during the end of each lesson to test your English in a more informal way. This will help prepare you for your (possibly first) conversations in English in the outside world and help me to learn more about your culture, and you with mine if you like!

I hope to speak with you soon!
