My name is Stephen Johnson and I am from the USA. I specialize in teaching intermediate and advanced students who want to improve their ability to speak and write in English.

I have many interests and abilities and get along with all types of people. I've studied biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, genetics, computer and environmental science. My interests include art and design, music (I am a guitarist), audio production, world cultures and religions. I was a certified project manager in New York City where I managed Internet and ESL software projects. I was a carpenter and worked in construction management. I am also a certified SCUBA diver. I read a lot and in addition to literature and non-fiction I like to keep up with world events, politics and current affairs.

I enjoy the English language and teaching very much.

I have been teaching English since 2011 at various organizations in India and as an online English tutor.

I have a TESOL/TEFL certificate for completing a 120 hour course, but to be honest I learned how to teach well by teaching for many years and developing my own program. I have developed a method called Ubu English (you can google it) to help people learn to speak English naturally, without having to think about it so much. I break down English into simple concepts that allow you to see deeply into the language and help to activate the subconscious processing that is so important to developing fluency. I don’t teach grammar in the traditional way because I think it is too complex for 2nd language learning, however it is very important and helpful to have a well developed sense of how words and phrases combine in English to produce meaning. Using English well and easily comes from understanding this and developing a natural feeling for what is correct - this is what I teach, and I do it without using complex grammar rules and terminology.

My basic philosophy is that anyone can learn to speak English naturally and easily without needing to struggle with complex grammar rules, memorization and translation. Learning English can and should be both fun and rewarding.

I use Google Docs to give you study materials and for activities and exercises, some of which we do together and others that are assigned. This is a well developed program that produces results.

Not everyone is up for a course, so I can also work with you in conversation practice, interview preparation, business and other types of writing, and I can give lots of tips and advice on how to study and practice on your own. My style is supportive, encouraging and positive. While learning English requires a lot of effort, I do my best to make it fun, interesting and rewarding.
