I am a native English teacher, born in Oxford, with nearly 15 years experience teaching English in Spain (and now I live in Tenerife).

After completing my Biology degree at Edinburgh University, I was interested in becoming a teacher and travelling. I realised I could combine these two interests by becoming an English teacher. I studied the CELTA, then the DELTA and found my vocation.

After completing the CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching), I worked for a few years then wanted to extend and deepen my knowledge of language teaching. In International House, Barcelona, I completed the Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages - one of the most recognised and well-respected English language teaching qualifications), getting a Distinction in the Professional Practice module. Doing the DELTA was an extremely rewarding experience which greatly improved my teaching style. It helped me to develop a much deeper understanding of English language teaching and learning.

Giving classes in companies in Tenerife has given me an understanding of the needs of professionals in a variety of sectors. It has also given me the opportunity to be creative in producing relevant and interesting material and in developing personalized academic programs for each student and group.

To learn a language, first you need to learn how to learn.

Humanistic education is a dynamic educational approach which takes into account all relevant aspects of people's real lives. By studying with me, what my students get are the tools to learn effectively and autonomously.

In my classes I place an emphasis on humanistic teaching and real life use of the language. By basing the content of my classes on what my students need in their day-to-day lives, my students can experience and feel that language is not an academic subject, rather it is a representation of real life.

With these tools, I try to guide and involve my students more and more in their own learning journey. In this way, my job is not so much to teach English, rather it is to help my students learn English.

Después de terminar mi carrera en Biología en la Universidad de Edimburgo, me interesaba la enseñanza y me interesaba viajar. Me dí cuenta que podría combinar los dos intereses siendo profesor de inglés. Estudié el CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching), y después el DELTA (Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching) y así encontré mi vocación.

Después de completar el Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching), trabajé durante unos años y sabía que quería extender y profundizar mis conocimientos de la enseñanza de idiomas. En International House, Barcelona, completé el Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages – Diploma en la Enseñanza del Inglés para Hablantes de Otros Idiomas, uno de los cursos más avanzados y respetados relacionados con la enseñanza del inglés), habiendo conseguido un “Distinction” (Sobresaliente).

Hacer el DELTA fue una experiencia muy provechosa que mejoró inmensamente mi manera de dar clase. Me ayudó a desarrollar un conocimiento mucho más profundo de la enseñanza y del aprendizaje del inglés.

Trabajar dando clase a empresas en Tenerife me ha dado un conocimiento de las necesidades de los profesionales en diferentes sectores. Me da la oportunidad de ser creativo en buscar materiales relevantes e interesantes y desarrollar programas académicas personalizadas a cada estudiante y grupo.

Para aprender un idioma, primero hay que aprender a aprender.

La “educación humanísta” es un proceso educativo dinámico que incluye todos los aspectos relevantes de las vidas reales de las personas, según sus necesidades. Al estudiar conmigo, lo que consiguen mis alumnos son las herramientas para aprender con eficacia y autonomía.

En mis clases hago énfasis en la enseñanza humanísta y en el uso real del idioma. Basando el contenido de las clases en lo que necesitan los alumnos en su día a día, pueden experimentar y sentir que el idioma no es un tema académico, sino es una representación viva de la vida real.
