Ausführliches Profil auf Englisch

Über mich

My name is Mirella and I am a keen traveler to offbeat destinations around the world, yoga practitioner, gardener and mosaic craftswoman, I lived in Wales for five years, where I worked at University, and in London for another three years where I bought, renovated and sold historic houses. I have taught at the Liceo for twelve years, allowing myself the time and the concentration to raise my two sons and look after my family, pets and house. I recently relocated from Italy to the United States, with my sons and my husband, whose career has now provided us the opportunity to relocate permanently to Baltimore.

Lehransatz

I have experienced with my students that a mix of two distinct approaches to teaching Italian as a Foreign Language, the Communicative Approach and the Direct Approach, has produced the best teaching/learning results.

In a few words, the Communicative Approach aims at the progressive acquisition of the ability to use a language to achieve one's communicative purpose, it is context specific (based on the situation) and represents a shift in focus from the grammatical to the communicative properties of the language. In the Direct Approach grammar is taught inductively (rules are generalized from the practice and experience with Italian). Advanced students read literature for comprehension and pleasure. Literary texts are not analyzed grammatically. Italian culture is also taught inductively. I consider Italian culture a crucial aspect of learning the language.

Moreover, I like teaching Italian in a very practical, amusing, and relaxed way. I use textbooks, magazines, newspapers, works of art, films, videos... Nearly anything and everything that may encounter or rise from our students' interests... I focus on Italian as spoken in everyday conversation, encouraging spontaneous conversation, emphasizing correct pronunciation, and highlighting the fundamentals of Italian grammar.

I have had 3 lessons so far and I like working with Mirella. She has been very careful in finding out what I want/need to learn. She figured out pretty quickly that I am interested in all things Italian and so our conversations have been pretty wide-ranging, which is great for me. She has good suggestions for different ways to learn, but is not rigid and always tells me that if something isn't working for me then we can try something else. A very good experience so far.
