My name is Graça - Grace if it is easier - and I am Portuguese.

I am a History and Archaeology post grad with a post graduation qualification in Teaching.

I'm single, and other than teaching and learning, my interests are literature, music (I love Opera!), movies, and the outdoors. Portugal has beautiful spots you can go for natural beauty and solitude :)

I'm bilingual, English-Portuguese. In addition I have always loved idioms, and speak several: Portuguese, English, Spanish and French (not so well), and a little Italian.

I have a College Degree in History and Archaeology by the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, and I also have a Teaching Post-Graduation by the same University.

I have the First Certificate (grade A) by the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

All through my learning years, I tutored younger students in any subject they needed (in Portugal, up to the 9th Grade, it's a common path) and I continued to do so as I went through College and until I had my first job as a teacher. I had excellent results, and that gave me great confidence.

I worked as a History and English teacher for some years, then as a Translator of English for 15 years. I translated novels, encyclopedias, science books, scientific studies and articles, just about anything. I worked for publishers and for individuals. I also proof-read for some University Professors.

I believe I am amply qualified to tutor students in Portuguese, due to my profound knowledge of the language and my training in teaching.

Individual tutoring has got to be the dream of any teacher. It's the only way we can devote ourselves to the needs of that specific person and make it all about them, instead of having to tailor a class to fit 30 different individuals, which really means we fit none.

I start by asking my students what they would like to get from this tutoring, and ask them to be as detailed as they can about it: what they hope to achieve (doesn't matter if it seems doable or not, just say it), what they're afraid of, what they perceive to be their strong points and their weaknesses (if any).

Then I ask them what interests them, and what subjects would be more helpful in their lives: work related, perhaps? Or are they just looking to be able to keep a conversation on any subject - to actually speak the language?

Where do they find the Portuguese they wish to learn? Books? TV? Internet videos or articles? Music?

All this helps me tailor fun lessons, that often include role-playing, and help me detect, on the spot, weaknesses that need work - areas of vocabulary, grammar, any skills that need tweaking.

Over time, I have learned that different people respond to different ways of learning, but some principles remain always true: the KISS principle, for example - Keep It Super Simple, with many examples and simple ones.

The first lesson - the free trial - will consist of informal conversation where both student and tutor will agree on what they will focus during the course of the lessons, and a short introduction to the Portuguese Language.

HOW IT WORKS

Basically, four sections are important: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Each one is essential if you want to "speak" a language.

Within these, come Grammar and Vocabulary.

In order to make it fun and challenging, I will have materials - PDF documents, so that you can read and/or print, and that can help us have more interactive lessons and most of all, have more fun :)

However, your needs and hopes are my guiding compass throughout the whole process. They are the reason we are doing this, and I merely want to impart a better and more powerful way of achieving your goals!

Possuo uma pós-graduação em História e Arqueologia e uma pós-graduação com Estágio no Ensino

Sou solteira, e para além de aprender e ensinar, interesso-me por literatura, musica (adoro Ópera!) cinema, e passear na Natureza. Portugal tem sítios fantásticos onde encontramos beleza e sossego!

Sempre tive excelentes resultados, e isso deu-me uma grande confiança.

Trabalhei como Professora de História e Inglês durante alguns anos. Depois trabalhei como tradutora durante 15 anos. Traduzi romances, enciclopédias, livros de ciência, estudos e artigos - um pouco de tudo. Trabalhei para Editoras e para indivíduos. Também revi textos para Professores Universitários.

Acredito estar amplamente qualificada para ensinar Portguês, dado o meu conhecimento profundo da língua e a minha experiência e qualificações no Ensino.

Aulas individuais têm de ser o sonho de qualquer professor. É a única maneira como podemos dedicar-nos exclusivamente às necessidades de uma só pessoa e fazer a aula apenas acerca dela, em vez de termos de adaptar conteúdos já definidos a 30 pessoas diferentes – e na realidade, não ir ao encontro de ninguém.

Eu começo por perguntar aos meus estudantes o que esperam obter destas lições, o que gostariam de reter, e peço-lhes para ser muito específícos: o que esperam conseguir (sem preocupações de se parece factível ou não), quais os seus receios, quais acham que são os seus pontos fortes e os seus pontos mais fracos (se existem).

Depois pergunto-lhes o que os interessa, e que matérias lhes seriam mais úteis: relacionados com trabalho? Ou pretendem simplesmente ser capazes de manter uma conversa sobre qualquer assunto – apenas falar a língua?

Onde encontram o Português que pretendem aprender? Em livros? Na TV? Na Internet: vídeos? Articles? Music?

Tudo isto me ajuda a compôr lições divertidas, qua frequentemente incluem role-playing, e me ajudam a detectar, na altura, pequenas fraquezas que precisam de ser trabalhadas – áreas de vocabulário, gramática, ou qqualquer outra área que necessite de ser um pouco revista.

Ao longo da vida, tenho aprendido que pessoas diferentes respondem a formas diferentes de aprender, mas que alguns princípios permanecem verdadeiros, como por exemplo, Manter Tudo Super Simples, com muitos exemplos fáceis.

A primeira lição – a lição grátis – consiste numa conversa informal em que tanto estudante como tutora chegarão a acordo sobre o foco principal das lições e os seus objectivos e uma pequena introdução à Língua Portuguesa

COMO FUNCIONA

Basicamente, há quatro secções importantes: Ler, Escrever, Ouvir/Compreender e Falar. Todas aão esseciais se alguém quer aprender uma lígua.

Com elas vêm a Gramática e o Vocabulário.

De forma a transformar as lições em algo divertido e interessante, vou providenciar materiais. Estes materiais serão JPGs (imagens leves que qualquer computador pode abrir), e documentos em formato PDF que poderá ler e/ou imprimir, e que nos ajudarão a ter lições mais interactivas – e divertidas :)

No entanto, as suas necessidades e objectivos serão sempre a minha bússula neste precesso. São a razão por que estamos a fazer isto, e eu pretendo apenas proporcionar-lhe uma maneira melhor e mais poderosa de alcaçar os seus objectivos!
