My name is Preetam Prakash and I am originally from Philadelphia in the northeast US. I am a native speaker of English and currently live in Taitung, Taiwan. Towards the end of this past year I finished an MA in East Asian Studies at Stanford University with a concentration in Chinese history and culture. I'm excited about helping you all improve your English and reach your personal goals in your study of the language. I think that my teaching experience, my time abroad, and the time I have spent studying foreign languages will be very useful in this regard.

I love traveling and coming into contact with different cultures and ways of thinking. I have lived in China and Taiwan for three and a half years and have also spent a year in total working and traveling in Mexico, Ecuador, and other parts of Latin America. In addition, I have spent extended time in the UK, Japan, India, and Vietnam. To date, I have studied Chinese and Spanish to an advanced level, and Japanese to an intermediate level, and am thus particularly well-suited to assist you if you are a native speaker of these languages. I have a good sense of the specific types of problems that Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese speakers encounter when studying English. For instance, I am familiar with the difficulties that phrasal verbs present to Spanish speakers, the troubles that native Chinese speakers have with conjugations, or the issues that Japanese speakers might face with respect to certain aspects of English pronunciation. I am happy to work with you on these or any other facets for your English that you're interested in improving.

I have taught TEFL for a total of three years at universities in both China and Japan. I earned a TEFL certificate as a part of my pre-service and in-service training as a US Peace Corps China volunteer and have taught a range of classes, including Conversational English, English Literature, and Current Events. I also have a year and half of volunteer experience teaching TESL in the US to immigrants from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. The students I have taught to date include various age groups, nationalities, and skill levels.

I know from my time teaching TEFL and TESL that what the majority of English learners need is the chance to talk at length in the language on topics that they are interested in. I was often surprised by how quickly my former students in China and Japan improved when given a welcoming and supportive environment in which to practice! I have developed a number of study techniques and methods in the course of my own language study that I would be delighted to share with you. Passion and interest are the most important ingredients for successful language learning. Once we have a chance to go over your own specific interests in our first conversation, I will do my best to come up with appropriate discussion topics. If you would like, I will also be happy to search for suitable reading material around which to structure our conversation. I view our classes as a collaboration with the ultimate goal of allowing you to improve your English in a more enjoyable and efficient way!

Much of my own work and academic experience is in the social sciences, humanities, and education. I read a great deal in a number of fields including current events, literature, history, and politics. I will do my best to increase your fluency and to provide you with new vocabulary and ways to express your ideas. During my time teaching, I have focused on developing my students' public speaking and debating skills so I will also be able to help you in these areas if you would like. Additionally, I have a lot of both academic and non-academic writing experience so I would be happy to offer editing suggestions for any reports, papers, etc. that you may have to be working on in English.

Sobre Mí

Me llamo Preetam and soy estadounidense, originalmente de Filadelfia en el noreste de los Estados Unidos. Acabo de terminar en los finales de este año pasado una maestría en Stanford University, donde mis estudios se enfocaron en la historia y cultura China. Yo tengo muchas ganas de asistirte en mejorar tu ingles y lograr todos tus objetivos en este respeto. Creo que la experiencia que ya tengo en enseñar TEFL y TESL, el tiempo que he pasado al extranjero, y también mis propios estudios de los idiomas extranjeros me asistirán en ayudarte perfeccionar tus conocimientos del idioma inglés.

He vivido en China y Taiwan por tres años y medio y también he pasado un año trabajando y viajando en Mexico, Ecuador, y otras partes de America Latina. Además he pasado tiempo extendido en Inglaterra, Japón, la India, y Vietnam. Hasta ahora, he aprendido el español y el idioma mandarín al nivel avanzado. Además, tengo un alcance del nivel intermediado del lenguaje japonesa. Sé bien cuales son los aspectos del inglés que con frecuencia se traen dificultades a los hablantes de español. Mí forma de enseñar

Me ha llamado la atención durante mí tiempo enseñando TEFL y TESL que lo que necesitan mas la mayoría de los estudiantes de inglés es la oportunidad de hablar mucho y en detalle sobre los temas en que tengan interés. Muchas veces tenía sorpresa al darme cuenta de la rapidez con que mis estudiantes antiguos en China y Japón mejoraban su habilidad de platicar al inglés cuando uno les prestaba un buen ambiente en lo que podían practicar. Por mis propios estudios de idiomas extranjeros he desarrollado métodos eficaces del aprendizaje y sería muy feliz compartirlos contigo.

Mucha de mi propio experiencia academia y profesional ha sido en los ámbitos de las ciencias sociales, las humanidades, y la educación. Si estas interesado en charlar sobre los asuntos corrientes, la literatura, la política, la historia, u otros temas ligados, en tal caso yo sería un tutor muy apropiado para ti. Yo leo mucho en todas estas disciplinas y haré lo más posible a mejorar tu nivel de fluidez y darte nuevo vocabulario y expresiones con los que tú puedas expresar tus ideas y sentimientos en una forma mucha más profunda. He enfocado mucho en las clases que he enseñado en desarrollar las habilidades de los alumnos al respecto de la oratoria y el debate, así que puedo ayudarte en estas áreas. Tengo adicionalmente una gran cantidad de experiencia con varias formas de la escritura, tanto la académica como la no académica, puesto que estaré felíz ofrecer algunas sugerencias lo que conciernan cualquier reporte, ensayo, u otra cosas en que trabajas.
