About me - English
Hi, my name is Laura Al-Albani and I specialize in teaching the Arabic language to non-native speakers of Arabic and also to heritage learners. Heritage learners are those who grew up in an Arabic-speaking household, but were never schooled in the written language known as MSA or Modern Standard Arabic.
I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.
I attended the University of Missouri-St. Louis and received my bachelor's degree in Psychology.
After graduation, I moved to Jordan where I spent two years teaching English to Arabs at the International Baccalaureate School in Sweilah. Upon my return to the USA, I obtained my Master's degree from Washington University in St. Louis in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies with an emphasis in Arabic language.
I began teaching Arabic in 1997 at St. Louis Community College.
In 2007, I was hired by the University of Missouri-St. Louis where I presently work teaching Arabic language classes at the beginner, elementary, intermediate and advanced levels.
I divide my time between St. Louis and Saudi Arabia where I live with my family.
Qualifications & Experience
MA in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies with an emphasis in Arabic language.
16 years of experience teaching Arabic at the college and university level.
BA in Psychology from UMSL
Teaching Approach
I use a proficiency-based approach to teaching focusing on all language skills including reading, writing, speaking and listening.
I believe that learning should be fun. I use lots of songs and games to help you remember things.
