About me

I am 42 years old, I have been lving in Peru since I 2003 when I arrived as a volunteer teacher working with poor children in Bajo Piura. Since then I have made a living teaching English in Peru.

I am a single mum who has a 10 year old daughter who is a champion swimmer for her age group in Trujillo. Teaching online will give me the freedom to be able to dedicate more time to my daughter. I come from England where I have all the rest of my close family, therefore teaching online also gives me the opportunity to be able to travel to visit my family while at the same time continuing to work.

12 years - English as a foreign language teacher

18months - learning support assistant to students with physical, mental, emotional and specific learning difficultues.

6 months - history teacher

1 year - drama teacher

I have taught students as young as 2 years old up to the mature adult learner - the oldest being a 60 year old grandma who was learning English to visit her grandchildren in America.m I have taught beginners through to advanced level students and done teacher training language awareness courses.

My teaching experience ranges from the pre-school classroom, primary school, secondary school, university students studying a language degree, and language institute. I have also taught private classes.

Teaching Approach

I enjoy teaching and the first thing I like to do, especially with small classes or private students, is to find out what the student likes, why they are learning English, and how they like to learn. With this information I can tailor the classes to suit individual student needs.

I have a varied approach which helps to stimulate student learning - I like students to gain confidence in their language skills, I encourage them to communicate, primarily through speaking and I also enjoy helping students develop their writing skills. I teach grammar and vocabulary through two different methods depending on the learning style of the student. First is learning through exposure, letting the student discover the language and its meaning, the second is through a more direct approach where I provide the information. English, grammatically, is very formulaic and once students know the order of words then it is just a matter of learning vocabulary, meaning and function of the language.

Additionally, I also have activities to develop listening and reading skills. I work with websites that allow me to post exercises to practice, This is because learning a language is not just about the contact time with a teacher, but also the practice that students put in between classes to reinforce learning and pass knowledge from short term to long term memory. It is easy to understand something when you are with a teacher who can help and guide you, it is something different to realize that you really have learnt because you understand and can use the language outside the class situation.

That is obviously my aim to help students learn from me and to help them learn how to develop their knowledge themselves.

I do every thing that I can to ensure that classes are practical and fun. Building a trusting relationship with my students is of the utmost importance, without trust between tutor and student it can be difficult for student to reach their full potential.
