Hello! My name is Alice and I am a qualified ESL/EFL teacher. I have Italian roots but I have been living in the UK for 15 years and I'm a native level speaker of both English and Italian.
After a degree in Photography, I started teaching abroad because I wanted an opportunity to travel and build my photography portfolio. I soon realised that I loved teaching and almost forgot about Photography! I'm building my career in ESL working with a wide range of clients, with different companies and as a freelance teacher.
I consider myself well organised and a good communicator both in and out of the classroom. I am very creative and enjoy developing materials to suit the needs of my students. I am flexible, adaptable and a quick learner.
After a basic TEFL certificate, I obtained a CELTA and I specialised in Young Learners.
I first trained as an educational tutor when I was employed as a Tutor at Aberdeen University in the academic year 2009/2010 and I have been working as an EFL teacher in Europe and Asia since 2013 in variety of contexts. My classes have covered all ages and all levels: Primary and Secondary school, General English to Adults (all levels), Academic English and private mentoring for exams.
I am very committed to my professional development and I always keep up to date through online courses and webinars. While employed, I took full advantage of the Professional Development Programme offered by my company and I have benefited greatly by evaluating on my own performance through peer-observations.
I intend to obtain a DELTA within the next two years.
Working with a wide range of clients I have become competent in recognising, understanding and meeting the needs of my students. I usually establish a very good rapport with my students, creating a positive atmosphere, taking into account their age and ability. Considering the different teaching settings, I always establish aims and objectives in accordance with my students and always evaluate the outcomes of our achievements through assessments and feedback.
I am aware that for many students learning English often constitutes a fundamental step in their professional (and private) lives and for this reason I try to keep my lessons as authentic as possible, providing as many real-life situations as I can. Ultimately, I strive to help learners develop self-confidence and autonomy because I believe that making students aware of their strengths, progress and development needs gives them the necessary confidence to test themselves in the real world, thus making their learning process a meaningful experience.
I use material from a wide range of sources (books, Internet, etc.) in order to plan my lessons, but I particularly enjoy making my own materials, as it allows me be creative while adapting contents to my students’ needs. In the first lesson, usually the trial lesson, I carry out a little oral test to assess the language skills of my students. It also a chance for us to get to know each others and for me to understand exactly what the students' needs are and what they intend to achieve.
Sono cresciuta e ho frequentato le scuole in Italia. Ho ricevuto una preparazione classica e umanistica. Nel 2003 mi son trasferita in Gran Bretagna per frequentare l'universita'. Ho una laurea e due Masters e mi sono occupata principalmente di storia e linguistica. Insegno inglese da diversi anni come insegnante certificata CELTA.
In quanto madrelingua Italiana non ho conseguito alcuna certificazione ufficiale per l'insegnamento. Ho insegnato privatamente a studenti sopratutto in ambito universitario.
