Hi! My name is Maggie Carey. I love teaching English because I love meeting new students and helping them to improve. I have been teaching English for 25 years. I lived in China for 15 years. I taught English there to students in College. I also taught some children in middle school and high school.
I love meeting people from new cultures. That's why I got a Master's Degree to teach English. I live in a small town in northern California now. I still teach English in the college here. My students are both immigrants who have come to the U.S. from many countries. I also teach writing and reading to college students.
I look forward to helping you improve your English skills. I invite you to have a free trial lesson, so I can find out what your specific needs are. I believe that the best way to learn English is to use it, of course. So my classes are designed to give you as much practice speaking as possible. I am a patient and easy-going teacher. I like to have fun with my students while they are learning. I can help you with all aspects of English including pronunciation. I can help you improve you scores on IELTS and TOEFL as well.
I have extensive experience teaching writing for university as well.

BA Degree in Spanish from University of Nevada, Reno, 1993
MA Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages from University of Nevada, Reno, 1995
I have taught English to foreign language speakers for over 25 years.
I am currently teaching part time for Butte College and California State University, Chico as English and writing instructor.
Learning can be fun!
I want to make class as lively as possible, so I specialize in student-centered learning: getting the student involved in using English for real purposes. I avoid using drills and rote practices and focus on using language as a skill to accomplish tasks. Students should expect to do homework to make their class time most effective.
I also like to combine reading, speaking, listening and writing. Reading, listening and writing can be done outside of class, so that class time can be used for speaking and reviewing the things the students have studied during the week.
It is useful too, to have the student bring to the class his/her interests and talents so the class can be designed to meet their needs.
Because this is a one-to-one class, it can meet the individual learners needs specifically.
