Hello, my name is Electra Xanthouli and I'm an experienced Ancient Greek language tutor currently living in Greece. I have been teaching Ancient Greek online since 2018. I am currently offering a free initial trial lesson for new students.
About me - English

Hello, I’m Electra and I’m teaching the Ancient and the Modern Greek as well as the French language for over 15 years. I love my profession, because through the interactive learning process, I gain the experience of self improvement and better understanding of the world.

Have you ever felt that hearing the Greek language sounds like music to your ears? Have you ever wished you knew how to pronounce, comprehend, speak and write, depending on your time and personal needs? If so, I'm inviting you to learn Greek with me via Skype, adjusted to your specific aims.

Our Greek language journey starts with "καλημέρα" ("kalimera") and daily speaking in Modern Greek, taking us back to the time when Plato or Heraclitus conceived their theories about the world.

Be well and I hope to see you soon on my screen.

Qualifications & Experience

I graduated in French Literature from National and Capodistrian University of Athens and Greek Literature with specialisation in Classics from University of Patras. Since 2000, I have been teaching French and later Ancient and Modern Greek with emphasis on etymology. I have also translated French editions about the Fine Arts, Architecture, Photography and Engraving.

In the last few years I have been focusing on a new, holistic approach to Modern Greek Language Teaching. This approach includes, on the one hand, bodily movement, music, images and scenic tools and, on the other hand, the acoustics of letters and a systematic classification of etymological roots as codes for deciphering words. In this context, I have written the work “Mythology-Movement-Language”, inspired from Hesiod’s “Theogony”, where there is reference to all the letters of the Greek alphabet and all the etymological roots. My work “Language and Playing”, which follows the lead of my prior work, is a workshop for primary school children and is presented in municipality buildings and other venues.

Focusing on an acoustic and etymological approach to language, I teach lessons in Ancient Greek to children and adults as well as seminars to foreigners. Finally, I give lectures on the etymological analysis of words as a main tool for teaching the Greek language, to audiences consisting mainly of educators and parents.

Teaching Approach

My teaching method is innovative, because it is based on the Greek etymology* and the characteristics of each letter (phonemes) which constructs the words.

Firstly, we pronounce properly, we separate the etymological roots from suffixes, we study the notions (=ἒννοιες → ἐν (=in) + νοῦς (=mind) < √γνο-gno. As derivatives in Greek: γνώση (=knowledge) γνωρίζω (=to know), in English: to know, knowledge, notion and many more in Greek, English and in other languages).

Secondly, as we gather the already known roots (each root has its original meaning) and the suffixes, we enrich little by little the vocabulary, we explore the grammar and gradually we structure more and more complicated sentences.

This method, applied in my students, took me some years of scientific research and I guarantee that once you obtain the knowledge and the data, you‘ll have them at your disposal for the rest of your life. During our sessions, we intend to speak Greek, diminishing gradually the English or French interpretation.

At the end, the ultimate purpose is to enjoy the whole process, because as Plato said, without joy and playing, learning is useless.
