Detailed Profile in English

About me

I am a native Chinese speaker from central China, and have lived abroad in Canada and Ireland since 2000. I am currently working as a Chinese language teacher and Chinese-English translator.

My educational background is in foreign languages and linguistics, so I understand how exciting and challenging learning a new language can be. I have been blessed for the opportunity to have grown up in a Chinese family (I embrace all my cultures and traditions, the weird and wonderful), the opportunities to have learned English, Spanish and French as my second languages - they have become one of my greatest assets in life. My favourite pastimes are traveling, cooking and going to the cinema. I enjoy meeting new people from different parts of the world, sharing our cultures, customs and traditions.

I hope that you will be as delighted and inspired as I was in my language-learning journeys. I have the patience, adaptability and enthusiasm in helping you suceed. I am looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for the Chinese language and culture with others.

Qualifications & Experience

I started teaching Mandarin Chinese and English while studying at university. I have been a language teacher for over 3 years now, teaching both adults and children. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics in 2015 and my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification at the University of Toronto in 2017.

I have worked as a Chinese-English translator for several international translation companies. I translate, revise and proofread documents, in addition to localizing and transcribing content and in the legal, scientific, medical and educational fields. My area of specialization is medical and pharmaceutical.

My Chinese teaching experience includes teaching one-to-one classes to adults and children both in-person and online. I have helped university students, working professionals prepare for HSK exams, future studies and travels in Mainland China and Taiwan. I have worked as an English Conversation Teacher at Education First, delivering English classes to groups of 2-10 students online. Therefore, I understand that every student is unique, teaching approaches must be well-adapted to the needs, strengths, weaknesses and interests of every learner.

Teaching Approach

Many people say that Chinese is difficult to learn. I wouldn’t say it is difficult - it’s simply different! I know from my own experience that learning a foreign language should be both a rewarding and, at the same time, a scary adventure. All languages have aspects about them that you might hate or love. For example, you may be intimidated by the Chinese characters that resemble hieroglyphs, or the impossible pronunciation of certain pinyin sounds, like “c”, “j” and “x”, but keep in mind that once you get over that hurdle at the beginning, the rest is relatively easy - Chinese grammar is very straightforward, there are barely any rules to memorize! We have no verb conjugations, articles, noun genders, past or future tenses, subjunctive modes.

Chinese can be a strange language for many speakers of Romance and other western languages in that it presents a new way of thinking about the world around us, and that’s the beauty of learning it. Not only will you be able to understand the mother tongue of over 1 billion people in this world, gain insight into their history and cultural heritage, you will be able to open many doors to opportunities in employment, studies and travels. Whether you are learning Chinese for business, school or personal enjoyment, it can bring you so much, enhancing the way you live, work or play. In my lessons, I will not only teach you how to speak and understand Chinese better, but also help you learn about the culture and history of the many Chinese-speaking communities.

I adapt my teaching style to suit students’ needs. I can help you learn in a stress-free environment, you will soon be able to form full sentences and survive in every-day situations. Learning Chinese is a lot of fun - you will find it amusing to post pinyin and Chinese characters on sticky notes all over your house to help yourself remember how to say names of all the furniture!

My lessons includes listening, conversational practice, or whatever you feel you need help with, whether it is preparing for a job interview, a study-abroad semester or a trip to a Chinese-speaking region.
