I am a native English speaker from South Africa. Being part of a country which has 11 official languages means I have been surrounded by non-native speakers my entire life and understand the challenges people face when trying to communicate. I currently teach and live in an international school in Thailand, where I am gaining significant reward from the students I teach. I have 16 years teaching experience and continue to gain inspiration from seeing students develop and grow. I believe in my students and will ensure that they are engaged and wanting to achieve to their best abilities.
I am a qualified Early Childhood educator, currently studying a Master's Degree in Learning and Teaching while teaching full time in Thailand. I am the curriculum coordinator in an international school in Thailand and facilitate the implementation of English as a second language. 99% of the students I teach are Thai citizens who begin their school careers with little to no understanding of the English language. I am also a qualified reading therapist, having worked with children and adults in Africa who have been diagnosed with dyslexia but overcome their learning difficulties through my teaching methods.
I believe that students understand best when they can construct meaning for themselves. Through a constructivist and inquiry approach to learning and teaching, my students are engaged and able to discover their place in this world. I allow students to ask questions, as they inquire into the relevance of their surroundings and how they are connected to their learning environment. My teaching environment is student-centred which means we work at the student's pace and at their level of interest. The teacher-centred environment of teachers teaching from a blackboard has been replaced with teachers facilitating learning rather than dictating how and what should be taught.
