Hello, my name is Ryan Devin and I'm 40 years old and currently living in Thailand. I am a native English speaker and teach English. I have been an online English teacher with since October 2018.

Detailed Profile in English

About me

I am a teacher with over 20 years teaching experience in the UK and abroad with a passion for teaching in all its forms as well as specialised knowledge which I consider to be a unique asset with regard to teaching English.

In the UK, my experience across the voluntary and statutory sectors covers English teaching at all levels from primary and secondary education to FE and university, literary workshops, conferences and performances with adults and professionals across the country to community-based workshops with young people across Merseyside and the North West.

Most recently, my time in China has given a perspective on English teaching which I feel only furthers my knowledge and ability to appreciate the variety of differentiation within the 'wider' sector. I consider my knowledge of developments and relevant policies and procedures in this industry/sector and the broader public sector to be as up-to-date as possible.

I pride myself on my ability to organise, design and deliver lessons and/or modules within set curriculum or otherwise to fully engage and motivate students, as well as my ability to monitor and evaluate both my own and my student's performance. I am as comfortable and able working as part of a team as I am working under my own initiative and consider myself to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Above all, I feel my love of English language and literature is something which manifests itself in both my teaching and my personality.

Teaching Approach

My teaching approach is first and foremost a person-centered practice. I pride myself on my ability to work with students at their level of ability. Whatever the level the student is at - this is the point at which my professional help and tuition must begin. The student is always the priority. As a professional teacher with many years experience across all levels and age-ranges, I have also learnt that one of the most important skills a teacher can have is the capacity to listen to their students. Without this, the task of understanding where a student is in his/her 'language journey' is almost impossible!

I believe that trust between a teacher and student is another very important factor. Therefore, my approach is also one which attempts to engender a trusting relationship between myself and my students. Sometimes it's as simple as being friendly, open and interested in students - their hopes, dreams, aspirations. Other times, it takes a little more effort. Perhaps a student is doubting themselves, comparing themselves to others, worrying about a failed test or interview. This is when encouragement and compassion, understanding and experience comes to bear. Positivity is key at these times. Being a positive influence on your students can work miracles and is part and parcel of establishing a trusting relationship.

Lastly, my approach to teaching is a professional one. This may seem like an obvious trait to stipulate however, I feel that it is too often overlooked or taken for granted. I am a professional teacher and that comes with a responsibility which must be taken seriously. No matter what teaching style I choose to adopt - something which must be flexible and adaptable to the student/students - I am always professional in my approach.
