Hello! My name is Dana Drahos, I'm a 26 year old woman from America, currently living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I decided to quit my job at an advertising agency in New York City in June 2018, to pursue a life abroad.
I'm a native English teacher and am TESOL certified. I've been teaching English to Vietnamese university students and professionals for 10 months. I've grown so much personally over the past year. I think traveling abroad is crucial to becoming more culturally aware and also more self-aware. This is why I love teaching English, because I want others to have the same opportunity I had to travel, meet so many new people, and discover more about myself. In my free time I like to learn about podcasting-- someday I'd like to host my own podcast about self-development, travel, and teaching English. I also like to dance hip hop, and try new foods.
While I was still working in NYC, I took a 120-hour online TEFL course by the International TEFL and TESOL training company. Then, when I arrived in Vietnam, I took an in-class 150 hour TESOL course including 80 hours of instruction, 50 hours of written work, 12 hours of practical teaching and 8 hours of classroom observation. This is a Certificate IV in TESOL from the Australian International College of Language. During this course I taught children ranging from 2 years old to 18 years old.
I have been working full time as an English teacher since September 2018. I have taught general English to professional adults and university students.
I am very open and friendly in my classroom. I like to create a warm environment where students can feel ok to make mistakes and have fun. I like to get to know the students more personally, and learn more from them about their culture and share my culture with them. I enjoy a very relaxed, conversational interaction. Many students have complimented me on my crystal clear voice and speaking speed, they've said I'm very easy to understand.
I like to put students in real-life situations. I will ask you to give me the vocabulary and the phrases you know, rather than me giving you everything. This allows you to think, listen, and speak in English much more. It will also help you to remember the language better. For example, let's say you want to go to a restaurant. I'll ask you for food and drink vocabulary. Then I'll ask you how you can order food, and what the waiter will ask you. Then we will do a role-play where one of us plays the waiter and one of us plays the customer, so you can practice the language freely. I will correct you and give you feedback throughout the lesson. LET'S LEARN ENGLISH YAY!
