About me - English
Hi. My name's Cormac Franklin and I'm 49 years old. I'm a native speaker of English, originally from Ireland I now live in Novi Sad, Serbia with my wife and two beautiful children. I'm a CELTA qualified teacher with 28 years experience. I speak Serbian. When I'm not teaching I enjoy photography and reading.
Qualifications & Experience
I started teaching at the age of 21 when I moved to Hungary and I did a CELTA course two years later. I also hold certificates in teaching Young Learners and Business English.
In my 28 years of experience, I have taught all levels, from Beginner to Proficiency, and all age groups from 6 to 60+.
I have a successful track record in exam preparation, teaching Business English and Skills (such as Presentation Techniques), and teaching General English.
I started my career as a freelance teacher giving individual lessons. I then worked for several language schools in Budapest, both as a teacher and in management roles. Before I moved to Serbia, I had reached the position of Director of Studies in a Business English school in Budapest. When I moved to Novi Sad, I returned to teaching only, which I prefer. Since then I have been teaching freelance, both online and off.
Teaching Approach
I believe that for effective learning to take place, students must feel relaxed and at ease, and my experience has taught me that everyone has different styles of learning. This is why I adapt my teaching style to meet my students' needs.
My role as a teacher is to guide my students to understanding by helping them connect new information with their existing knowledge. Therefore my lessons are very interactive as I prefer to use guided analysis and concept questions rather than direct explanations when introducing new grammar or vocabulary items. I am equally happy to provide very structured lessons leading to a specific goal such as passing an exam or to take a more fun, looser approach, depending on the needs of my students. I also like to create my own material from authentic texts and videos. This has the advantages of making the language more alive and allowing me to personalise lessons based on my student's interests.
