My name is Sara and I currently live in the United States. I have a passion for learning languages, cultures and teaching. I have one year of teaching experience, working with students in the primary and secondary school levels, learning English and two years of working as a tutor for high school students.
I grew up in San Diego, California, and my heritage is Turkish. My passion for languages and teaching started during my undergraduate studies when I first started taking classes focusing on the history and structure of languages and literature, leading me to major in Liberal Studies and minoring in Literature. In addition, I hold a TESL/TEFL certificate.
I have traveled to several states in the US and countries such as Turkey and have had the opportunity to interact with so many people and experience the beauty of cultural diversity and history.
My principles are hard work, believing in oneself and never stop learning!
I hold a Bachelors of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Sociology and a minor in Literature and Writing Studies from California State University, San Marcos. After graduation, I completed an intensive, 6 weeks Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate program at my alma mater in 2018. The program included topics such as Building Speaking Fluency, Design worksheets for Pronunciation and Speaking, Pronunciation, Exploring Teaching Strategies, Grammar and Cultural Differences in Languages.
After graduation, I worked as an ESL Instructor Assistant at a private school in Istanbul, Turkey, for one year from 2018-2019. I worked in the primary and secondary school levels where I assisted the classroom teacher with the lesson plans and offered private tutoring sessions for students with beginner and intermediate English levels. I used workbooks such as FUN FOR MOVERS, FUN FOR FLYERS, FUN FOR STARTERS and Raz Kids. In addition, I worked with high school students who were preparing for their TOEFL exam prior to entrance into universities and colleges. I focused on speaking, listening and understanding skills as well as communication skills on any topic of interest.
My experiences working abroad have helped me to understand cultural differences and diversities and this has impacted my teaching strategies. I have gained a better understanding of the challenges that ESL students encounter when learning a new language or culture.
I have a variety of strategies and priorities in teaching. I am always open on learning new ideas and strategies that will help me develop better communicative approaches and teaching strategies.
1st. I always speak with the students in order to help improve their weaknesses, skills and strengths, when it comes to learning a new subject. This helps maintain the motivation to learn a language because the students can mention their ideas and skills on learning things such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation which I can incorporate into the lesson.
2nd. I maintain a WELCOMING and OPEN atmosphere where students feel comfortable and motivated on learning a new subject.
3rd. LISTENING, SPEAKING AND PRONUNCIATION are skills which I mostly focus on. They are extremely important to develop the student's conversational skills.
4th. I use a range of visuals, music, books, worksheets and movies when teaching a new language.
I look forward working with you and let's have fun learning English :)
