Hello,

My name is Dan and I am a 28 year old native English speaker from western Canada. I have been teaching in Europe for about three years and currently I am working as a teacher in Poland, which is the country of my ancestry.

Some of my major hobbies include traveling as often as possible, learning foreign languages, and socializing with friends who from all corners of the world. I am also fluent in Polish, which I consider as an asset for my Polish students, and I'm gradually learning French and Italian at this time. Other activities that I enjoy include singing, playing squash, and watching good cinema.

I am a TESOL certified teacher with a BA in General Studies and have obtained at least three years of teaching experience in Europe.

I have worked in various language schools in Poland and Croatia with different methods and approaches to teaching English (eg. the Berlitz method). At these schools I've had the chance to conduct lessons in General English, Business English, and conversation activities with adults, teens, and children. Aside from working at language schools I have also acquired experience conducting private one-to-one lessons with students, which is now my main occupation. In fact, I believe that experience gained from private tutoring is the most valuable in regards to conducting one-to-one lessons with students online.

When conducting lessons I prefer to use the communicative approach. I believe that regular practice speaking English with a native speaker is essential for improving and mastering the English language. We can meet online to have conversation about any topic of your choice supplemented with various materials to aid the learning process, such as texts, vocabulary lists, videos, grammar exercises, games, etc.

Along with Skype I encourage students to use TeamViewer software which enables me to share my desktop screen with the student and thus give the student access to any content on my screen which can be useful for learning.

Another important aspect of my approach is the use of Berlitz correction techniques. Working at a Berlitz language centre has equipped me with the skills to help students with self-correction rather than just spoon-feeding the student with the correct word or grammatical structure. Many teachers simply provide students with corrections without allowing the student to engage in the correction process by understanding the error and by substituting it with the correct word or grammatical form. Self-correction is the most effective way for students to ameliorate and improve their English so that they may speak more confidently and fluently.
