About me - English
I am a former professor with 15+ years of teaching experience. I've also been a college admissions counsellor, prep school English teacher, book/journal editor. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1992. Between my bachelor's and master's degree, I taught English, Composition, and Writing Prep/ESL at the community-college level. I completed my master's degree (specializing in literary and cultural theory) at the University of Toronto. I then taught in the Literature Department at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, FL, where I was also formally trained as a college counsellor.
After several years, I decided to embark on doctoral studies and completed my PhD at the University of California/Santa Cruz in the History of Consciousness Department with multidisciplinary training in the History of Science & Medicine, Modern Thought, Post-structural Philosophy, and Gender Studies. I have been a professor at Mills College, Macalester College, and UC-Davis.
I am also familiar with the English and Writing sections of the standardised tests (TOEFL, SAT, GRE, etc) and have taught prep classes as well as one-to-one tutoring. After I left the United States to live in Germany, I started a private tutoring company focused on helping college students apply to American and British graduate schools.
Qualifications & Experience
I have 15 years of teaching experience at a variety of levels, including high school, community college, and university. In addition, I have taught private and group classes for standardized test prep (TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT). Specific topics within English Language include

I hold a Bachelor's degree in English from Smith College, a Master's degree from the University of Toronto, and a PhD from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Teaching Approach
I think the most important thing you need to know is that I'll meet you at whatever level you are on, from ESL to PhD dissertation coaching, and offer the tutoring/writing assistance you need in a style that works for you. I had a more standard teaching approach when I was in front of the classroom, but when it comes to one-to-one tutoring, I tailor my approach to the individual student.
If you are looking for someone who is very demanding and want to be held to a standard of perfection, I can do that, but I also love working with people who are more laid-back and just want to improve their English or pass a test. I'm committed to making the experience as fun and interesting as possible. I provide lots of helpful feedback and I will develop exciting and effective exercises to help you improve.
