About me - English
I am a native English speaker from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I have experience in both communication, and teaching English online. As an online English teacher I have taught a myriad of international students, which has allowed me to gain a plethora of teaching experience. Teaching students from such a wide variety of nationalities has also provided me with a well-versed understanding of cultural sensitivity. I have a passion for gaining knowledge and researching various topics in order to stay up to date with world events. I work very well under pressure, am reliable, punctual, and am seeking to develop my English teaching career.
Qualifications & Experience
I am qualified with a Bachelor of Arts in English linguistics and English literature, which I achieved with Cum Laude.
My English language studies course work encompasses numerous fields of English academia. My specializations include Applied Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, General Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Language Acquisition, Morphology, Phonetics, Phonology, Pragmatics, Semantics Sociolinguistics, Structural Linguistics, and Syntax.
My English literature course work includes Shakespearean English, English Renaissance, African literature, South African literature, popular literature, narrative fiction, poetry, and drama.
I am certified with two TEFL qualifications, one online TEFL qualification from Foundation TEFL, and one 120-hour in-class TEFL qualification from Bay Language Institute.
I am a lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honours Society.
I worked for Education First, a leading international English teaching platform, for 14 months as a full-time online English teacher. During this time I taught live online video lessons to international students with varying ages and English proficiency, covering a wide variety of topics and aspects of English language studies. The syllabus which I taught during my lessons is based directly on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and covers the wide range of English language studies which the CEFR encompasses, as well as preparation for the TOEIC and IELTS exams. Apart from teaching the expansive syllabus, my responsibilities included grading students, providing constructive feedback and error-correction, as well as post-class availability, communication, and support for students.
Teaching Approach
My approach to teaching English is to prioritize interactivity and contextually relevant language. Having interactive lessons with students is a great way to increase the motivation and engagement levels of students. Adapting lesson content to games, role-play dialogues, and interactive tasks, allows lessons to be both fun and effective in maintaining student engagement. My lesson planning involves adapting the lesson content to the unique contexts, motivations and fluency levels of each of my students, interactively engaging my students with content that is relevant to them.
