I am a 32 year old fully qualified primary school teacher with a Bachelor’s degree in education and English. I also have a wealth of teaching and life experience (which you can read about in depth in the area of experience below).
My accent is easy to understand I've been told, due to the fact I have taught children and adults on 4 different continents. This, coupled with achieving high grades in speech and drama and being a state public speaking champion in secondary school, mean I am an excellent communicator.
I love sport, especially athletics and rugby. I have played both sports and am an avid follower of the Irish rugby team and Irish athletics. Baking, yoga and walking my miniature husky help me unwind after a busy day.
Music is a big love of mine and I am currently learning how to play the banjo, which has helped me empathise with my students even more, as it can be very challenging at times! I believe determination and a positive attitude can help you overcome almost anything however, and I apply that philosophy to many areas of my life, but especially to teaching. Everyone has potential to learn, it's just a matter of unleashing it!
I have an honours Bachelor degree in education and English and over 10 years full-time primary teaching experience in Ireland and Australia.
I have volunteered over my summer holidays in teaching English as a foreign language to disadvantaged children and teenagers in Delhi, India and in a rural setting in Uganda. I have also taught male adults from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, English while they were awaiting refugee status in Australia. I also spent two summers teaching English to Italian teenage students in Dublin and prepared them to successfully pass their oral exams they sat at the end of the summer.
I currently teach in a special educational role in a primary school 30 minutes from Dublin and work with children who have needs ranging from autism to English as an additional language and am thoroughly enjoying it. All of the above experiences have shaped me to be the teacher I am today - enthusiastic, highly organised and empathetic.
I'm an experienced, passionate educator, who loves to make teaching and learning fun and engaging. I believe we all learn in different ways and have always made it my mission to find out how my individual students learn best. I make it my business to find out what you want to learn and how you like to learn. I am of the opinion that it is my responsibility, as your teacher, to use that knowledge to tailor-make lessons to suit your needs and assess that learning accordingly.
I enjoy being creative in how I teach language. In the classroom I have used methods ranging from drama, song, rhyme, visuals, funny acronyms, debates and discussion to help students grapple with challenging grammar rules and vocabulary.
I feel passionate that learners should feel happy to take risks in their learning once the teacher establishes the right atmosphere, one which motivates and inspires students to strive for their goals.
Feedback is something I know is of huge value to students, and is an opportunity to build students' confidence through specific praise, while also giving them constructive feedback to promote further learning. I encourage students to question both me and the material they are studying while they learn, as that is the key to learning. If students question what they are learning and relate it to their own prior knowledge, they are much more likely to retain any new information or concepts.
I look forward to getting to work with students from all over the world and ensure I will make you as enthusiastic about your learning as I am about teaching!
