About me - English

I'm an Irish citizen and a native English speaker living in the United States.

I instruct in both US and UK English, according to requirements.

I am a fully-qualified English language instructor with over ten years' classroom experience teaching students at every level from Beginner to Upper Advanced and from every language background.

I have a clear, neutral accent and passion for education and teaching English.

I enjoy creative writing, drawing, painting, reading, cinema and the great outdoors. I am fun and easy to talk to and am proud to have routinely been described by students as 'the best teacher I have ever had'.

Qualifications & Experience

I took my BA and MA from University College Dublin (English, Drama and Philosophy)

I am fully qualified as a TEFL instructor: Cambridge ELT Certificate (CELTA) and have published online EFL resources and given seminars on EFL.

I am an EFL teacher trainer.

I am also a professional travel and technical writer and editor and am widely puiblished, with a comprehensive knowledge of English grammar and syntax and (I am told) a fine style.

For the last six years, I have worked with EF language schools in Dublin, Ireland whilst pursuing a career as a writer. I have worked as an events co-coordinator and a tour-guide.

I have tutored students for all of the major EFL examinations including TOEFL and TOEIC, IELTS and the Cambridge FCE, CAE and PCE exams, which I have also marked.

I have an enormous vocabulary and a comprehensive knowledge of English grammar.

I have also lectured, primarily on literature, art, politics and popular culture.

I have coordinated writing workshops and creative writing classes, art classes, drama workshops, book clubs and seminars on public speaking and presentation.

I have taught classes on English for use in every situation from Business and Marketing to Engineering and Science.

I have also generated a large amount of my own material in the form of games, tasks, exercises and guided conversation classes.

Teaching Approach

My teaching approach combines high levels of humour, energy and enthusiasm with a structured approach to progressive learning, early responsiveness to student needs and a fundamental belief that bored people cannot learn.

I am a great believer in the the concept that nothing is boring with the right approach and I am great value-for-money.

No idle chatting: conversation should be guided and supplemented with excellent board-work, specific tasks and an underlying grammatical or vocabulary point. I illustrate grammar and vocabulary with drawings and diagrams.

I excel in guided pronunciation and phonics. I also use music, art and games as part of my teaching strategy.

I prefer to work from a set syllabus with a good basic textbook, from which I can make diversions and set side-tasks according to student's needs.

I will set up a dropbox account where agreed materials and texts can be shared.
