I have been teaching Bengali for 25 years. I love to teach and I always want my students should enjoy my class in every step of their learning process. I love literature and art. I teach all levels of Bengali, starting from elementary to advanced. I help my students to fulfil their short-term or long-term goals.
I am very comfortable in teaching virtual classes. My course materials are free and they are online.
So, welcome to my Bengali class.
I have a long history of teaching Bangla. After I finished my MA in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University. I joined in American Institute of Indian Studies in Kolkata as a Bengali instructor in 1991. I was fascinated by my profession. Teaching Bangla to non-native speakers was very uncommon in those days and I was drawn to it because through teaching I came to know different people from different cultures and at the same time, I also had something to offer from Bengal.
In the beginning, I had to learn how to teach from my intuition and experiences. There was not a laid out template for me in the 90's. But later,I also got a lot of training through numerous workshops and I realised that my hunches in my early teaching time were correct and I was moving in the right direction all along.
In 2004, I moved to USA to teach Bengali in the University of Michigan. It was my first trip to USA and I loved teaching there and I stayed with University of Michigan until 2007. Then I moved to Chicago to teach in the University of Chicago until June,2016. Also almost every summer from 2005-2016, I taught Intensive Bangla in the South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) in the University of Wisconsin. I love teaching in different scenarios and different people. Teaching bangla is the love of my life. While I was in Kolkata from 1992 to 2004, I gave private lessons of Bengali to scholars, NGO volunteers, business people and tourists from the United States, Europe, and Australia at basic, intermediate and advanced level.
Now, I am based in Kolkata and have recently started teaching Bengali online.
My approach of teaching is relaxed but methodical and organized. I prepare students before my class and write a post-class review. I explain each task and activity and remind students how they will benefit from it. My classes are fun as I do not like to have high stress-levels in class because I think that does not help either the students or the teacher. My handouts are useful. I am flexible in terms of teaching methods and my materials.
Since 2015, I have been doing Oral Proficiency Testing training. Completion of this training will help me to detect the accurate level of oral proficiency of any Bengali learner.
Mandira Di is an excellent teacher. I have a baseline knowledge of Bengali. She was able to quickly assess my strengths and weaknesses and adjust the lesson plan accordingly. The class was fun and interactive. I will be working with her again!
