About me - English
Hello! My name is Iiris, and I am a Finnish language teacher and language specialist with extensive experience in online teaching.
I have been teaching Finnish professionally since 2022 and have delivered more than 1,000 online lessons to over 90 students at levels ranging from complete beginner (A0) to upper-intermediate (B2).
I hold a Master's degree from the University of Turku, where I specialized in Finnish and Finno-Ugric Languages. My academic background has given me an in-depth understanding of Finnish grammar, language structure and linguistics, which I combine with several years of practical teaching experience.
I enjoy helping students understand how Finnish works and, most importantly, how to use it in real-life situations. I teach students with a wide variety of goals, including everyday communication, work, studies, relocation to Finland and personal interest.
In addition to teaching, I design Finnish language learning materials and online courses. I aim to make Finnish clear, structured and approachable, even when the grammar initially seems complicated.
I look forward to helping you develop your Finnish skills and become a more confident and independent user of the language.
Qualifications & Experience
I have been teaching Finnish professionally since 2022 and have extensive experience working with adult learners from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
I currently teach Finnish at Edunation, where I work with adult learners at beginner and elementary levels (A0-A2). My work includes planning and delivering lessons, creating learning materials, supporting students' language development and assessing their progress.
Alongside my institutional teaching, I have taught Finnish extensively through private online lessons. In total, I have delivered more than 1,000 online lessons to over 90 students, from complete beginners to B2-level learners. This experience has allowed me to work with students with very different goals, learning styles and linguistic backgrounds.
I also have experience providing Finnish language training to corporate clients and creating digital learning materials. I have designed and published six comprehensive online Finnish courses covering Finnish grammar and practical language use.
I hold a Master's degree from the University of Turku, with Finnish and Finno-Ugric Languages as my major. My university studies included advanced study of Finnish language, linguistics and language structures. This academic expertise enables me to explain Finnish grammar accurately and in depth while adapting explanations to each student's level.
My teaching experience includes Finnish grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, speaking, reading, writing and practical communication. I have worked with students learning Finnish for everyday life, work, university studies, relocation and long-term language development.
Teaching Approach
I believe effective language learning requires both a solid understanding of how the language works and plenty of opportunities to use it in practice. For this reason, my lessons combine clear explanations of Finnish grammar and vocabulary with practical communication.
Each student has different goals and learns differently, so I adapt my lessons to the student's level, interests, learning style and objectives. A complete beginner may benefit from a structured introduction to essential grammar and vocabulary, while a more experienced learner may focus more on conversation, accuracy, natural expression or specific areas of difficulty.
Grammar is an important part of my teaching. Rather than simply asking students to memorize rules, I explain the patterns and logic behind Finnish structures and use examples to show how they function in everyday language. Students then practise applying what they have learned through exercises, speaking, reading, writing and real-life situations.
Depending on the student's needs, lessons can include grammar, conversation practice, pronunciation, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, listening, writing and correction of errors.
I also use repetition and review to help students consolidate what they have learned. When appropriate, I provide additional exercises and learning materials so that students can continue practising independently between lessons.
My aim is to create structured, supportive and engaging lessons in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Ultimately, I want students not only to understand Finnish but also to develop the confidence and skills to use it independently in their everyday lives, studies and work.
