My name is Valentinos Filippou. I have been a full-time Greek teacher since 2012.
I am a book-lover (I read on average two books a month) and I enjoy books of many types (books on personal and professional development; on business; novels etc). I, also, enjoy playing football and love spending time with my fiancée, Maria.
I studied at the University of Athens Classical Philology (this included Modern and Ancient Greek languages) and teaching approaches and theories to the subject.
I graduated in 2011 and I went to Liverpool for my masters at the University of Liverpool. I studied Ancient History and, at the same time, I attended an online course from the centre for the Greek language in Athens which focused on teaching Greek as a foreign language.
I have also spent three years in Liverpool (UK) teaching Greek in Liverpool’s Greek School and privately. I focus on general, everyday Greek and I specialize in adult learners.
During the lessons, I make sure that my students are relaxed and comfortable with me. I also give lots of advice on how to make the most out of the lessons and how to improve learning from interactions outside class.
WHO I WORK WITH USUALLY: As a private online tutor, I work with people from different backgrounds and with different learning goals. I am working with people who:
love Greece and are interested in learning Greek for tourist purposes
people who wish to retire in Greece and want to learn the language before they go
people who have a family connection with Greece (their father or grandfather is Greek) and want to learn the language of their relatives back home.
if you belong to any of these groups, get in touch! You are the ideal student for me! :)
Having students from so different backgrounds and with so many different learning purposes requires a variety of teaching approaches.
I always arrange a pre-lesson meeting (either online or face to face) with interested people in order to obtain information regarding their level, the time they want to invest in their learning, their interests and their favourite way of learning things. Then, I suggest the appropriate learning materials. They are usually a blend of textbooks and online materials.
I always try to make the lesson fun and productive. I also believe in the power of technology and the positive impact that it can have in the learning process. I use a number of online educational tools to help my students.
So, if you are interested in learning modern Greek just get in touch with me. Try it and you will not be disappointed. The first lesson is free so you don’t lose anything.
I hope to hear from you soon!
