Hello! My name is Chris - I'm a highly experienced and passionate English teacher from the UK. I specialise in helping higher level students to take their English to the next level.
I'll provide the support you need to meet your specific goals, whether you need to improve your spoken fluency and confidence, elevate your vocabulary, learn more idiomatic language such as phrasal verbs and expressions, identify and fix your grammar problems, improve your pronunciation or prepare for an English exam.
I am a highly qualified and experienced teacher. I have now been teaching English for over 10 years, and I continue to find it a hugely enjoyable, constantly challenging and deeply rewarding profession. I love my job, and I think you'll find that this comes across in my teaching!
I'm originally from North Devon (definitely the most beautiful part of the UK!) but over the years I have lived and worked in places as diverse as Oxford, Buenos Aires and Bogota.
I enjoy doing lots of things, especially cooking, reading, learning Spanish, walking and running. More recently, I have been spending a lot of time looking after my baby daughter! I also love meeting and getting to know new people - this is a big reason why I enjoy my job so much.
I obtained the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) from International House Buenos Aires in 2008, and the Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) from British Study Centres in Oxford in 2013. I constantly seek to develop and improve my teaching.
I studied Philosophy at Cardiff University, graduating with a First in 2007. I then studied for a Masters Degree in Latin American Development at the University of London, achieving a Merit in 2008.
My 10 years of teaching experience has encompassed a wide range of levels from intermediate (B1) to advanced (C1) and proficiency (C2).
I have taught both General and Business English, both in groups and on a 1-to-1 basis. I have also helped many students to pass the Cambridge First (FCE), Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE) exams.
I always aim to make my lessons enjoyable and highly challenging for my students. I have a personal and very friendly approach - I take a genuine interest in my students and their lives, which helps me to tailor my lessons to their needs and interests.
I believe in the effectiveness of conversation driven, communicative learning, combined with targeted work on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. In our classes, you will find that much of what we focus on emerges naturally from our conversations.
In your first class, we can work together to decide on the content of your lessons, but they could include:
- Speaking fluency practice
- Grammar correction and explanation
- Vocabulary work, including phrasal verbs and idioms
- Listening skills, including understanding native speakers in the real world
- Exam preparation
Please note that my experience and approach makes my lessons most suitable for students who are intermediate (B1), upper-intermediate (B2), advanced (C1) or proficient (C2).
