Hi! I am Stella and I am Greek.
After my undergraduate studies in Thessaloniki, I moved to London for my master's and doctoral studies. Apart from studying and teaching (ancient and modern) Greek there, I had the chance to enjoy and love a city rich in cultural events and activities! After I moved back to my homeland, I have been teaching ancient and modern Greek to adults. Since September 2016, I have been teaching ancient and modern Greek language and literature as a Greek language and literature teacher at a Greek independent Junior High school. During the last school year I paused my Verbal Planet teaching to ensure high quality education for my students, but now that I have tackled the secrets of High School teaching, I am back ready to implement my experience to my Verbal Planet students!
I love teaching very much and most of my time is devoted to it. In Verbal Planet I have been teaching ancient and modern Greek, and I am absolutely fascinated by the experience of meeting so many people from all over the world, and communicating the beauty of the Greek language to them! My school experience has raised my enthusiasm to the skies because I have been able to apply many different teaching approaches to my teaching.
When not teaching, I continue my research on Greek literature. I am the author of two research papers published/to-be-published in English in acclaimed international journals. I believe that my research has a meaning only if this is communicated to other people and this makes me love teaching even more!
In my free time I enjoy cooking, playing the piano and reading Greek and English literature. I am also a passionate fan of Classical Music.
I learned German and French to an intermediate level some years ago. I am currently learning Italian and I am absolutely fascinated by this wonderful language!
I have a very strong academic background in Greek Language and Literature, and I hold degrees both from Greece (BA in Greek and Classical Philology, University of Thessaloniki) and the United Kingdom (MA in Classics and PhD in Classics, University of London).
Moreover, I have substantial teaching experience, both face-to-face and online. In the United Kingdom I taught ancient Greek Language and Literature to undergraduate students, but also to adult learners on intensive summer school courses. I also taught modern Greek as a second language at the local Greek community school. In Verbal Planet I taught Latin and ancient and modern Greek to adult learners of all levels and background from October 2014 to August 2016. Since 2016 I have been teaching ancient and modern Greek language and literature to all levels at an independent Junior High School.
My students are always my priority! My teaching approach is student-centred and communicative. Although I focus on cultivating the communicative skills, I also systematically work on grammar and vocabulary because these are the cornerstones of building strong communicative skills. I always aim to make knowledge relevant to the students' everyday experience. At the same time, I strongly believe that in order for teaching to be effective, it must also make learning a truly enjoyable experience.
To this end I build my teaching approach on my students' desires, needs and enjoyment! This is also my criterion for choosing methods, texts and / or subjects. I am flexible with my methods and if the students' needs or wishes are different I am always happy to adjust the lesson and the syllabus to them. During the first lesson, I discuss with them, listen to their aims, desires and thoughts, and we plan the lesson on this basis together.
I am patient, meticulous and committed to high quality teaching.
