I'm Nick. I have helped thousands of people around the world learn and practice their English skills.
I was born in London, and studied drama at the University of Cape Town. I started teaching English in 1987 in Cairo, Egypt. I have also helped Unilever's management improve language skills in St Petersburg in Russia, and then I taught English in Taiwan while learning Mandarin.
More recently I worked for eleven years at Inlingua Language Training Centre, Cape Town, helping students from Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, Angola and many other countries.
I enjoy teaching beginner and elementary learners, and developing the conversation skills of more advanced learners.
I specialize in business English training, with over four years experience at the World Trade Centre Taichung, as well as with corporate clients visiting Cape Town from companies such as Lufthansa, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron and Sonangol.
I also coach IELTS candidates, focusing on writing tasks, and in speaking, which I particularly enjoyed while helping develop BP's Angolan trainees.
I am also a qualified adventure guide. I arrange English Learners hikes and adventure weekends in Cape Town's famous wilderness parks like Table Mountain.
I believe language learning should be stimulating and fun, and I have helped my wife create a live-theatrical language-learners game show.
I have also worked as an actor, and enjoy writing, having written a novel and news articles, relating to culture, hiking and animal issues.

Most people learning English already have some years of formal school lessons. They now need to practice speaking the language. So, I see myself more a language trainer than a teacher. A helper in the process. Helping you develop your fluency.
Make no mistake, I can be teacher-ish. I enjoy showing how grammar works in various situations and contexts. I use methods I learned as an actor and voice artist, especially exercises to help improve English pronunciation.
I studied a foreign language (Chinese Mandarin) over several years as an adult, so I know the huge amount of work and patience needed to develop fluency in another language. I understand why interesting materials and subjects are important when you practice.
If you need to develop writing skills, I have taught and graded many of the IELTS writing tasks in mock tests, and have a good idea of what is required. I especially enjoy developing those particular techniques, of rephrasing and developing a thesis and bringing it all to a conclusion in a short amount of time. This is because I also write for a living. I know that even as a English speaker it takes a lot of work and editing to achieve a fine result.
