About me

Nice to meet you. My name is Caitlyn and I love English teaching, painting and bears. I'm originally from the United States, but I currently live in Japan. I graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design as a drawing major, art history minor, in 2016 and have recently started to work on my masters in painting at the Kanazawa Art Institute.

Ever since I was small and I only had television and pen pals, I've always enjoyed learning about far away countries, meeting with new people and experiencing different cultures first hand. Some of my favorite places I have been fortunate enough to travel to include: the Alphonse Mucha Museum in Prague, Namhansan mountain in Seoul, and the night markets in Taipei.

Qualifications & Experience

Throughout university I was giving tours at the Haggerty Museum of Art and also volunteer teaching at the Creative Arts Academy of the Quad Cities over the summers. After graduating in 2016, I started working in Japan as a native English teacher, full time, with a company called Winbe. Every week I was responsible for designing lesson plans, preparing materials, and teaching 25-30 classes for both children and adults. Each class was 50 minutes in duration, with a maximum of 6 students per class. The content within each lesson varied depending upon the students' English levels and ages, but overall there was a consistent focus on listening and speaking skills, as well as pronunciation and grammar.

Annually, I also taught special courses specifically designed to help students prepare for English accreditation exams, such as: EIKEN and TOIEC. Ever since I started grad school, I have been teaching private lessons, part-time, to other students at my university and now I'm excited to be a part of a new community online and work with even more students.

Teaching Approach

During the lessons I apply the "learn it, use it, check it" method and I often review old material or teach new material through simple games. I ask lots of critical thinking questions and utilize spaced repetition so students have less chances to forget.

I'm not too strict. I find mistakes are really the best way to learn, so throughout the lesson I always maintain a professional, but somewhat casual atmosphere, so the student feels both engaged and relaxed. This allows them to openly ask questions and experiment with the language without worrying about being "perfect".

I have designed a few different lesson plans already, but the main content of our class will depend heavily upon the student's interests and motivations. I'm prepared to teach: phonics, vocabulary, reading/listening comprehension, EIKEN or TOIEC specific test preparation, pronunciation, and native level conversation tips and tricks.

Qualifications & Experience

大学の時にHaggerty美術館というでツアーガイドとして働いていて、夏休みの時にCreative Arts Academy of the Quad Citiesでボランティアとして教えた。
