About me

My name is Edwin Demey, I am from Venezuela and actually live in Quito, Ecuador, I have a degree in Public Relations and recently got a Spanish and TEFL instructor certification. As a public relations professional I know that communication is an extremely important aspect, especially in the field of teaching. It is not enough just to have the knowledge, it is also important to be a good communicator, to know how to reach the student. This is part of my teaching philosophy. I like languages and I like to teach. Spanish is my native language and English is my second language therefore I want to teach my native language using and applying all my academic knowledge and the experience I have acquired teaching English.

I started studying English since 1992, in the British Caribbean Islands and in London. Since then, I have traveled, worked and lived in several European countries and especially in English speaking countries. As a result, I consider English to be my second language.

Since then I have obtained different certifications that show the level of preparation and the domain I have of the English language, being the most recent to be acquired the English Proficiency Test for Teachers (Center of Applied Linguistics) and the international certification TEFL / TESL / CCA who would accredit me as a teacher of the English Language at an international level. I have recently got a certification as a Spanish teacher.

I am well organised and strong classroom performer, who has a proven track record of achieving excellent pupil attainment. Passionate about raising standards across all age groups and subject areas. By using my natural air of authority to maintain discipline, I can foster and maintain a positive school climate where pupils can reach their full potential. As an outstanding and inspirational teacher with very high personal standards, I am committed to the learning and development of my students. I have high expectations of both myself and my pupils, and show an interest in every student as an individual.

I feel that my greatest strengths are firstly my strong commitment to teaching to the highest possible standards. Secondly my skill at working efficiently as part of a team, and forming personal bonds with other staff members. Thirdly my desire to do everything possible to ensure that my pupils not only meet but indeed exceed all of the academic goals and targets set for them.

Teaching Approach

The main objective of most of our Spanish courses is to improve the student's communication skills. This sounds obvious but in practice it can simply be forgotten because it is easier to teach through repetition and memorization, focusing on grammar rules and structure instead of aiming to fulfill the real purpose of language: communication. In most of the courses, the emphasis in each class is placed on the development of the student's abilities to speak and understand spoken Spanish.

I employ several Spanish teaching methods that depend on the student's learning style and needs, but I mainly teach using the communicative method with a task based focus. In this way I make sure that the student learns to use the language as opposed to just "knowing" it.

When students start learning Spanish their ultimate goal is to understand and be understood. They want to be able to have a conversation, to understand and give explanations, to listen to the news and read a book or magazine. The key is that they have to acquire the language, not just learn it, because language is more than knowledge. The best way to acquire a language is through the use of it, practicing it, talking and listening, and not through strict grammar studies and memorization. This is why a conversational approach is desired and the reason why classes should be entirely in Spanish, even if that means that it may be more difficult in the beginning.

When students start with basic and familiar conversation, they become comfortable in producing the new language. A very important aspect for conversing in the new language is speaker's confidence. The new speaker must learn to accept that he will make mistakes. Every single error does not need to be corrected, and the speaker should not be embarrassed as he tries. The most important thing is to deliver and understand the message: to communicate. If the message is delivered and received, the objective of communication has been met. After the student is able to communicate, many hours of practice as well as study will help the new speaker improve the way in which the message is delivered.
