Thank you Rakel, for that beautiful lesson! I so enjoyed making my own first Icelandic alphabet sounds today and appreciate your gentle corrections and enthusiasm. The Icelandic novel by the Nobel Prize winner Haldor Laxness is so beautifu to read and talk about with you. Also cool, was our conversation about the various rivers in Iceland and the museums in your captial. You are an expert and highly knowledgable teacher and so fun to be with!

What a wonderful learning experience it is for me to be with Rakel and that interesting Icelandic language and culture. Very excellent teaching and very precise instruction on how to make the sounds correctly. I also enjoyed being advised on which book to read first of the Icelandic authors. Thank you Rakel!

Thank you Rakel for sharing your beautiful culture with me: the music, the poetry, the volcano. I find as I learn the alphabet, that the sound of Icelandic is so soft and pristine, very clear. Thank you for a great lesson and see you soon again!

About me - English

My name is Rakel Krieger Alansdóttir. I grew up speaking both Icelandic and English, and I love teaching Icelandic to English speakers. I am able to teach in any time zone. I love teaching pronunciation and grammar! The Icelandic language has a rare and inspiring beauty, warmth and elegance. It is, in the words of the poet Jónas Hallgrímsson, okkar “ástkæra ylhýra málið,” our beloved, warm mother tongue.

Qualifications & Experience

I have worked as a translator, and I enjoy writing in Icelandic. I love to translate stories from Icelandic into English. I recently graduated from Columbia College Chicago In the United States, with a BA in Photography. I worked as a teaching assistant there, and often used experimental photography to express cultural and linguistic differences between Iceland and the US.

Teaching Approach

I have outlined three lesson plans. I like to keep reading and listening projects interesting and relevant, a mix of Icelandic current events and culture, with classic literature. „Auðvelt,” my first course, is simple and flexible. I start with the basics of the Icelandic language. This course is great for people who want to explore Icelandic culture as well as the language. Reading assignments are mostly in Icelandic but may also include English translations of Icelandic literature. The „miðlung” course places emphasis on reading in Icelandic, especially aloud. In this course I prioritise reading comprehension, pronunciation and excellent listening. For students who want to become fluent and who have some prior knowledge of Icelandic, my „erfitt” course will strengthen the focus on reading, pronunciation, listening skills, and advanced grammar.

About me - Icelandic

Ég heiti Rakel Alansdóttir. Ég ólst upp við að tala bæði íslensku og ensku og ég elska að kenna íslensku. Mér finnst gaman að kenna málfræði og framburð. Fegurð tungumálsins hefur alltaf veitt mér innblástur og ég elska að kenna fólki um mitt ástkæra land og móðurmál. Ég finn oft til heimþrá, sakna yndislegu hljóðanna. Svo ég hef reynt að kenna nokkrum vinum mínum! Að kenna íslensku er nú orðið mitt markmið. Það hefur sjaldgæfa fegurð, mýkt, hlýju og glæsileika. Það er, í orðum Jónasar Hallgrímssonar, okkar „ástkæra ylhýra málið.“

Qualifications & Experience
