My name is Milcah, an odd name for sure, but it matches an odd personality.

I was born in Manila, Philippines, however I'm actually biracial and my family is scattered all across our lovely planet, from Canada to Australia! Me, I live in Italy, Milan to be exact, with my lovely cat, a European Shorthair Tabby named Ziggy, and my lovely husband, a blond Italian man named Luca.

I love reading, writing, taking pictures on my digital reflex camera, watching films, listening to music and, most importantly, have an opinion on everything, from art to videogames. But most of all, I love getting to know others and discovering new things through all the people I meet in my job!

I actually started helping people learn English 30 years ago. Sounds unrealistic? I used to spend my summer holidays at my primary teacher's house in the southern English countryside, where she managed study holidays for children whose parents wanted to learn English. I used to be surrounded by children from all over the world (even all the way from Japan!) who I'd help out in and out of classes, encouraging them, teaching them new expressions or translating things for them.

However, I officially started working in the language learning sector in 2002, when I got a job as a didactic assistant at a language school. I mostly booked appointments and assisted students with their multimedia lessons, but it was a first step in what then became a lifelong career.

Two years later, I started managing some conversation groups, helping ESL talk about music, art, literature at any level of English they were studying at the moment. After some time I became a proper class teacher and even got myself a CELTA to develop my skills and learn new techniques.

I have since worked with a variety of language schools, businesses and private students, and have specialised in the use of English in professional fields such as Law, Finance, Sales and Marketing (among others).

When I plan a lesson, my priority is to put the student at ease. In a relaxed, friendly environment, people are more receptive to getting information in a natural, stress-free manner.

I believe one of the biggest obstacles English learners need to overcome is the lack of trust they have in their own abilities and skills. Language learners often rely too much on crutches such as grammar rules and exercises, which is usually caused by how the language learning experience was approached when they were at school.

But when learning with me, we will prioritise our passions, interests and needs, and learn to talk about them, so that the lessons will be more compelling, more effective and, most importantly, more fun!

Mi chiamo Milcah, un nome bizzarro che rispecchia una personalità altrettanto bizzarra!

Sono nata a Manila, nelle Filippine. Tuttavia, sono di origini miste e la mia famiglia è sparsa per tutto il mondo, dal Canada fino all’Australia!

Per quanto mi riguarda, vivo in Italia, a Milano, con il mio bellissimo gatto Ziggy e il mio bellissimo marito Luca.

Amo leggere, scrivere, fare foto, guardare film, ascoltare musica e ho un’opinione su tutto, dall’arte ai videogiochi.

Ma la mia passione è imparare a capire le persone con cui parlo e scoprire cose che non so dalle persone che incontro nel mio lavoro!

Di base, sono un insegnante d’inglese. Ho iniziato a lavorare nel settore delle scuole di lingue nel 2002 come assistente e segretaria didattica, ma ho deciso di passare alla parte puramente di insegnamento più di 15 anni fa.

Una volta deciso che insegnare era la mia passione, ho fatto una serie di corsi specialistici per imparare tecniche e strategie specifiche per l’insegnamento di una lingua, che è molto diverso dall’insegnare una materia accademica. Ho anche ottenuto una certificazione CELTA da Cambridge.

Ho accumulato molta esperienza sia insegnando gruppi nelle scuole di lingue che, particolarmente, in corsi più personalizzate e indirizzati a specifici settori lavorativi direttamente nelle aziende e gli uffici dei clienti.

Quando preparo una lezione, la mia priorità è di mettere lo studente a suo agio. In un contesto rilassato e amichevole, le persone sono più ricettive verso nuove informazioni e le apprendo in maniera naturale e senza stress.

Io credo che uno degli ostacoli più grandi che gli studenti di qualunque lingua devono riuscire a superare è la mancanza di fiducia nelle proprie abilità e conoscenze. Spesso ci si affida troppo a strumenti poco pratici, come memorizzare regole grammaticali e fare tanti esercizi scritti, come si farebbe a scuola.

Ma quando si impara con me, ciò che metteremo in risalto sono le nostre passioni, i nostri interessi e i nostri bisogni, e impareremo a parlarne, così che lezioni siano più avvincenti, più efficaci, e soprattutto più divertenti!
