Steven joined Verbalplanet in June 2012 learning Hungarian. With Hungarian being a language with relatively few speakers, finding a native speaking Hungarian tutor close to home or work proved challenging. By choosing to learn a language online, Steven was able to remove distance or the absence of a local language teacher as a barrier to learning the language of his ancesters.
I am learning Hungarian, which I spoke a little as a child with my great-grandmother. After she passed away, I tried to continue on my own but life intervened and I had to focus on studying other things and working.
I have been using Verbalplanet since January 2013. I’m re-learning Hungarian now to connect with my ancestry. Hungarian was always a special, secret language for me, and it has never lost that magical feeling. Every day, I look forward to learning new Hungarian words and improving my ability to read so I can enjoy Hungarian literature and poetry in it's original form.
